Live insect bioassays Kits

LIVE INSECT BIOASSAYS: Move from Assumption to 100% Certainty in Fumigation Success.

The Critical Second Dimension: Biologically validate the lethality of your fumigation to safeguard compliance and prevent costly re-fumigation.

Highlights

Risk Mitigation

Eliminate the uncertainty of fumigant gas stratification and absorption. Prove that the required lethal fumigant dose was achieved in the most difficult-to-penetrate zones.

Irrefutable Compliance

Generate hard, biological data to satisfy the strictest international regulators, supply chain partners, and quality assurance and food safety auditors.

Prevention of Financial Loss

Avoid devastating costs associated with failed fumigation, cargo rejection, logistical delays, and re-fumigation expenses.

Scientific Validation

Provides a direct, real-world correlation between your fumigant gas application and the actual mortality of target stored-product insect pests.

The Gap in Your Fumigation Process

For too long, fumigators have relied solely on Concentration-Time (Ct) monitoring to assess fumigation efficacy.  While essential for process control, electronic sensors in fumigant monitors only provide Proof of Potential, as they measure gas concentration at a single point.  Still, they cannot account for real-world variables like:

Introducing the GPA Live Insect Bioassay Kit: Proof of Kill

The Giridhar Pai Associates Live Insect Bioassay Kits close this critical gap by delivering a Proof of Kill, turning your fumigation from a hopeful action into a verified success.

Our standardised, ready-to-use kits are sealed vials containing laboratory-reared, resilient pest species—chosen for their hardiness and ability to represent the most difficult pest life stages (e.g., highly tolerant strains of Tribolium castaneum (Red flour beetle), Lasioderma serricorne (cigarette beetle), or Ephestia cautella (almond moth)).

How Live Insect Bioassays Work?

Insect bioassay data is the ultimate affirmation of your fumigation’s efficacy, aligning perfectly with the GPA mission: delivering maximum certainty in Pest Monitoring and Prevention.

Standardised & Sealed Cages

Pre-packaged, ready-to-deploy Kits that ensure minimal handling and consistent results.

Frequently Asked Question

Everything you need to know about Live Insect bioassays

Fumigant gas monitoring is essential for process control, but it measures fumigant gas concentration at a single point. It cannot biologically confirm that the concentration was sustained and reached every insect, especially given gas absorption and stratification, which can reduce the effective dose in difficult areas. Bioassays confirm the biological outcome (death), which is the ultimate measure of success in fumigation.

We select stored product insect species known for their resilience and resistance, such as cigarette beetles, red flour beetles and almond moths.  These insects are intentionally used as bioindicators to demonstrate that the fumigant dosage is lethal even to the toughest insects.

Our kits come with strict, easy-to-follow instructions.  We designed the kits for safety and ease of use.  Post-fumigation, the vials with the bioassays must be handled and held for the required observation period to determine insect mortality.  As they only contain wheat flour and dead insects, you may dispose of the vials and their contents in the trash.

Yes.  Bioassays provide the most compelling, empirical proof of fumigation efficacy.  They are widely recognised by international quality assurance bodies and can significantly strengthen your audit trail and compliance documentation, particularly for high-value or highly sensitive shipments.

You can store the bioassay kits at room temperature for up to 3 months and use them at any time during that period.  We have established that the wheat flour in the kit can sustain the live insects for three months.  If there are gravid adult female cigarette or red flour beetles, they may lay eggs in the wheat flour, and additional larvae, in addition to those placed by us in the vial, may be present after long-term storage beyond two weeks.

Yes, we provide customers with the flexibility to choose the life stage (adults versus larvae) and the species (either one or more within a Kit) from among the eight species shown in the specification.  Further, we can create bioassay Kits for other stored-product insect species based on customer requirements.
